Youth Orchestra and Academy of Music

The Susanville Symphony Academy of Music, which started as a Youth Orchestra in 2005, operates under the umbrella of the Susanville Symphony. The Academy offers a variety of classes for all ages and musical caliber of students both young and old, and is committed to developing the next generation of musicians in Lassen County.

Wind Ensemble: Craig Harris Conductor

This performing group consists primarily of wind and brass instruments (Flutes, Clarinets, Oboes, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone and percussion) and is open to beginning and intermediate musicians.  Classes will focus on intonation; correct fingering of notes, range and tone.

Beginning Strings:  Kaitlyn Nakanishi Instructor

This performing group will consist of Violins, Violas, Cello, Bass and Harp The class is open to beginning musicians who are either brand new to their instrument or would have been playing for only a few years. Correct hand position on the violin and bow, finger position on the strings and more.

Intermediate and advanced Strings: Kaitlyn Nakanishi Instructor

This performing group will consist of Violins, Violas, Cello, Bass and Harp The class is open to musicians who understand basic position and posture and who have played for over three years. Advanced technique, positioning, bowing and more will be included in the instruction.

Youth Orchestra Conductor and Academy Director: Benjamin J. Wade

This ensemble will constitute the best of both the Wind Ensemble and the Intermediate and Advanced String groups. Tryouts will be help for new players at the beginning of each semester. Phrasing, ensemble blending, advanced technique and musicality will be taught.

The Academy of Music starts each year in September and runs thru December for the fall semester and January thru April for the spring semester.  Recitals will be performed in both December and April.

There is no monthly fee to be in the academy and we are always looking for new musicians regardless of age.
