The Susanville Choral Society is preparing another great series of performances as it begins its fifth year of existence with the 2016/17 Concert Season. The group, an adult mixed-voice community choir, plans to present new selections of music that span an eclectic genre that fits into what would best be described as “from Bach to Rutter, and Bach again,” to quote Choral Director Liudmila Mullin.
Members of the Choral Society come from a wide background, but share the common interest of performing choral music. Rehearsals are usually on Wednesday evenings and singers receive sheet music and a rehearsal CD (or Mp3 clips) for all the music gathered for each concert. The group is often accompanied by a “pocket” orchestra, which is a small music ensemble that may include piano, woodwinds, and other orchestral instruments.
The group’s leader, Liudmila Mullin has an extensive musical background including a Masters in Music Education degree and many years of performing in a professional capacity on an international basis. Her first experience with Susanville occurred in 2006 while she was on tour with a music ensemble from St Petersburg, Russia. As Director of the Choral Society, she brings a wealth of skill and experience to the group with the hope of constantly improving singer skill levels as individuals, and as an organized performance group.
This year, the Choral Society will present two public performances during the season. New singers are welcome to join the Choral Society at any time during the year – auditions are never required. “I believe we have something to offer for all skill levels, from the singer who has never been involved in choral singing, to a singer with loads of skill and experience who might be looking for soloist opportunities, and everything else in between,” says Liudmila.
